Jim Payne comes from a family of singers on the western side of Notre Dame Bay in Newfoundland. He started singing around the same time he started talking and has since made a career as a songwriter and singer of traditional songs. In this year’s public lecture, Jim will explore the role of songs in our traditional and contemporary culture - as history, entertainment, social archive, how they connect us to the place, and how they help define us as a people.
